Abstract

When I was asked to give the closing conference of the XLV SEDEN congress, I proposed to talk about grief, that great unknown that we are all going to go through throughout, or in the short term, of our existence; I proposed it because despite the permanent contact that we health professionals have with people in grief, we are not prepared to normalise and effectively accompany the emotional storm that the loss of health or life implies. Certainly this gap in professional training is striking, if we consider that nowadays most people die in hospital and the first reactions of pain, the most intense, painful and contradictory ones are before us, the health professionals. Whether we like it or not, our attitude will influence the initial development of grief.
